Q Are there any technical requirements for taking courses on LearnDell.com/apac?
A There are 6 major system requirements that you should meet when taking online courseware through this learning site.

First, you should be running a version of Microsoft's Windows operating system. You can check your version by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and then selecting properties. This Windows version should be listed in the box that appears.

Second, a computer processor speed of 133MHz or better is required. This setting is much more difficult to check, but unless you are using an extremely old computer, it is likely that most users meet this requirement.

Third, screen resolution should be set to 800 by 600 with a color quality of 32 bit color. These settings can be found by right-clicking any open space on your desktop, and selecting "Properties." Click to the "Settings" along the tabs at the top. Change your resolution and color quality using the fields in this box, and click "Ok" when you are done, to save these settings.

Fourth, you need to have about 128MB of RAM or more to have a consistent experience with the courseware. Any less RAM, and there may be problems with your computer not having enough resources available to be running the course. You can check this value by right-clicking the "My Computer" icon, and then selecting "Properties." The RAM value will be near the bottom of this box. Note that some Windows versions present this value in the form of 128,000KB RAM. Just be aware that 1,000 KB of RAM = 1 MB of RAM. In other words, simply drop the last three digits.

Fifth, your web browser program should be either Netscape 4.7 or higher, or Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. You can check this version by starting up your web browser program and opening any web page. Click on "Help" way at the top, and select "About Internet Explorer" (or "About Communicator"). The version information should then appear.

Sixth, and lastly, check the version of your MS Java Virtual Machine. Click on the "Start" button for Windows, and select the "Run" option. Delete any text in this box, and type in "wjview." Press Enter and a small box should come up with a version number in the first line. This version needs to be 5.00.3802 or higher. If you get an error message instead of the box, or if your version number is too low, you will need to visit windowsupdate.microsoft.comClicking this link will open a new window and download security updates per their instructions. Security Updates for Windows are a good thing, and the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine is transparently packaged in those installations. Once you have done this, recheck your version using the above step.

If your version of Java meets the requirements, now check the Java settings in your Internet Explorer browser. Start the browser and click on "Tools" at the top, and select "Internet Options." Click on the "Security" tab at the top and then the "Custom Level" button at the bottom. Scroll down in this window until you see the "Java Permissions" options. Make sure this value is set to "Medium" or "Low." Click "Ok" at the bottom, and then "yes" to any warnings about changing your settings. Next, click on the "Advanced" tab at the top. Scroll down to the setting for Java VM (or Microsoft VM). Make sure all three boxes are checkmarked under this header (Java logging, Java Console, and JIT Compiler). Once this is done, click on the "Ok" button, and attempt to start up your course again.

Q Why do I only see a "Loading...please wait" message?
A The "Loading...please wait" message appears after clicking the course link, and before the course has fully loaded onto your screen. Sometimes when NETg courses cannot load properly, they just sit on this loading screen. This is almost always attributed to either an outdated Microsoft Java Virtual Machine version or misconfigured settings in your Internet Explorer browser.

First, check the version of your MS Java Virtual Machine.

If you are using Netscape and you continue to get this message and the course will not load, try using Internet Explorer. Some users find they have a better experience with the courseware when using IE.

Q Why does my page just refresh when I click the link to my course?
A When you click on the link to the course, a new window should appear which will then load the course. Check along your taskbar (the area of the window that organizes all your open programs and windows) and look for a window that you don't recognize or that has the title of "Menu-Builder." If you do not see this window, it may be possible that you have a firewall, anti-virus, or ad stopping program running that is stopping the new window from appearing. Try disabling any or all of those products and attempt the course again. If this still does not work, you can try closing all your open windows and programs. Try the course once more, just to verify that the window didn't get lost in the shuffle somewhere.

Q My course eventually loads, but why does it take so long?
A If your course is loading, but it is taking a long time to do so, you may want to reboot your computer and also check that your machine meets the system requirements for running courseware. Sometimes long load times can be caused by lack of RAM, slow CPU (processor) speed, or a slow internet connection (56K modem dial-up, for instance).

Q The course crashed, why?
A There are two basic reasons why courses may crash. First, make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for running courses. Particularly, Java and RAM requirements are the main causes of course crashes. Second, sometimes computers just crash at seemingly random points. Normally, a quick reboot will solve this problem and you will be able to continue in your course.

Q When I try to launch a course, nothing happens. Why won't my course load?
A This may occur if a pop-up blocker has been installed on the system. In order to launch the course, hold down the CTRL key while clicking on the course link, which will override the blocker and enable the course to load.

Q How do I save my progress?
A The saving of course progress occurs during the time a user logs out of the course and exits it properly. This is the only time a course is saved so that you can start up where you left off. In order to exit the course properly, make sure you click on the large green and black x in the upper left corner of the window. If you click the Windows x in the upper right corner, the course progress will be lost. Once you do this, allow the course to close as normal before opening it up again or logging out of the site totally.

Q I am trying to click or do something in the course, but am not allowed.

If this is a problem in the course, the courseware vendor will be notified and they can make appropriate changes with the next released edition of that course.
